How to Use the Zakat Calculator
- Today's rates: enter the 24K gold rate and the silver rate per tola from your local sarafa market, and choose whether to use the silver or gold nisab.
- What you own: enter gold (in tola, with its purity), silver, cash at home, bank balances, business stock, money owed to you and investments.
- What you owe: enter debts and bills that are due now.
The calculator adds up your zakatable wealth, subtracts what you owe, compares the result with the nisab and shows the zakat due at 2.5%.
What Is Nisab?
- Gold nisab: 7.5 tola (about 87.48 grams)
- Silver nisab: 52.5 tola (about 612.35 grams)
Because silver is much cheaper than gold, the silver nisab is a far lower rupee amount, so more people qualify to pay zakat under it. Many scholars in Pakistan recommend the silver nisab when your wealth is a mix of cash, gold and other assets, because it benefits more people in need. If you only own gold and nothing else, the gold nisab is often used. If you are unsure which applies to you, ask your local scholar.
How Zakat Is Calculated
Zakat = 2.5% × (zakatable assets − debts due now), if the result is at or above the nisab.
For example, suppose you have Rs 300,000 in the bank, Rs 100,000 in cash, business stock worth Rs 450,000 and an instalment of Rs 50,000 due. Your net zakatable wealth is Rs 800,000. If that is above the nisab, the zakat due is 2.5% of Rs 800,000 = Rs 20,000.
Gold is valued at its purity. 22K gold is 22/24 pure, so 2 tola of 22K gold at a 24K rate of Rs 300,000 per tola is worth 2 × 300,000 × 22 ÷ 24 = Rs 550,000.
What Counts as Zakatable Wealth
- Gold and silver, including jewellery (scholars differ on jewellery worn regularly, so check your school of thought)
- Cash at home and money in bank accounts
- Stock and goods held for sale in a business
- Money others owe you that you expect to get back
- Shares, mutual funds and savings certificates (many scholars count the zakatable portion of shares)
Your home, car, furniture, clothes and the tools you use to earn a living are not zakatable.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the nisab of zakat in tola?
The nisab is 7.5 tola of gold or 52.5 tola of silver. Multiply these weights by today's rate per tola to get the nisab in rupees.
How much zakat is due on 1 lakh rupees?
If your total wealth is above the nisab, zakat on Rs 100,000 is 2.5%, which is Rs 2,500.
Should I use the gold or silver nisab?
Many scholars in Pakistan recommend the silver nisab when your wealth is mixed, because it is lower and benefits more people in need. If you only own gold, the gold nisab is often used. Ask your local scholar if unsure.
Is zakat due on gold jewellery I wear?
The Hanafi school, followed by most people in Pakistan, holds that zakat is due on gold and silver jewellery. Some other schools exempt jewellery for regular personal use.
Do I subtract loans before calculating zakat?
Subtract debts and bills that are due now. Long-term loans are usually only deducted for the instalments currently due.
Why does the calculator ask for today's gold rate?
Gold and silver prices change every day, so the calculator uses the rate you enter instead of a stored rate that could be out of date.
